My Friend Huggles Brings Cheerfulness to Haiti!

Big Dolls Making a Big Difference.

Haiti project photo

This summer, two students at the School of Physical and Occupational Therapy at McGill University found a way to bring My Friend Huggles to people who need them.

With the help of the Institute for Health and Social Policy, they travelled all the way to Haiti to support an ongoing training program that is one of the most important initiatives to train rehabilitation providers. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere with 80% of its population of 10 million living in great poverty (PAHO 1998). Haiti also has the lowest level of healthcare spending in the Western hemisphere.

My Friend Huggles dolls allowed them to help teach treatment techniques, so that kids could have access to the healthcare they need. Moreover, the Kira dolls brought a smile to many kids in the rehabilitation room while they were there for therapy.

A little smile goes a long way.

My Friend Huggles can make someone’s day.

A warm testimonial to My Friend Huggles from the Mom of a hospitalized little girl.

This testimonial came from Melanie Boutlet, Mom of little 3 year old Abygel, after a hospital visit from My Friend Huggles.

Abygael received her doll when she was 2 years old from her grandma. Since that day they are the best of friends, Abygael feeds her, dances with her and sings her songs. Her doll even follows her when she sleeps at grandma’s. After being admitted to the hospital following her accident, her Rubi doll continues to comfort her. She has been here 3 weeks now. – Melanie Boutlet

Thanks so much for taking the time to write to us! We love hearing from parents, grandparents & caregivers and it warms our hearts to know that our hospital doll donations are making a difference.

My Friend Huggles is supporting Dressfest 2013, a charitable gala you wear your wedding dress to!

If you’re in the area, come out for an evening of dining, dancing and support Dressfest, a charitable gala where not only do you get to wear your wedding dress again, but where women unite with their families and friends to celebrate in style and give back to their community. This years’ Gala is in support of the London Regional Cancer Program & Patient Assisatance Program.
My Friend Huggles is supporting Dress Fest 2013, a Charitable Gala where you wear your wedding dress to!

“Our idea came to life when the group of us decided that we spend way too much money on a wedding gown to only wear it once. We thought it would be fun to have a “girls’ night” in our wedding gowns, whether we were married to the dress or not. We could have a few drinks, do some dancing and have a whole lot of fun… and we did!…It is difficult to express the feeling we experienced when staring into a kitchen full of ten brides with smiles on their faces and a song in their hearts. This is what we wanted to share with others.”

The Dressfest committee’s mission is to raise money annually for a good cause that helps their community. This year, My Friend Huggles’ Lily doll and accessories will be present in their silent auction. Awesome idea Dressfest! We love it! For more information on Dressfest 2013 go to: http://dressfest.ca

My Friend Huggles Mimi was there when a special little girl in CHU Sainte-Justine got a visit from the Montréal Allouettes.

The famous Montréal Allouettes recently visited CHU Sainte-Justine, Mother and Child University Hospital Centre. During the visit one little girl had My Friend Huggles’ Mimi doll keeping her company in bed. It’s absolutely wonderful and kind when celebrities and sports figures take the time to lift the spirits of kids. Giving courage and confidence. Way to go Allouettes!!!

Shriners Hospital for Children – using my Friend Huggles dolls to teach the scary process of operation and what a young child will expect.

Shriners Hospital for Children — Canada, located in Montreal-Québec, provides world-class care to children from across Canada. They treat children with a host of orthopaedic and neuromusculoskeletal disorders in a family-focused environment that puts children at ease. Every member of their staff, from surgeons to therapists, nurses to orthotists, are committed to helping children improve their quality of life and achieve as much independence as possible.

If your child needs to have an operation, there will be plenty of questions, concerns and fears on their part. At Shriners Hospital for Children they will be working with donated My Friend Huggles dolls to demonstrate procedures by using the large dolls as an aid to explain the scary process of operation and what a child will expect. With operations, your child’s age and developmental level play an important part in what they will deem scary but we hope having a happy, friendly-faced My Friend Huggles doll to aid in the process of explanation, their fears will be lessoned.

We are so happy our dolls are being used in such a special roll and it’s with great pride and love for these courageous kids and the upmost respect and admiration for the staff at the Shriners Hospital for Children that we share where our dolls are being loved. 🙂

We are proud and honoured to be supporting Starlight Children’s Foundation

At My Friend Huggles it is our sincerest goal to nourish the development of character values in children and support their emotional wellbeing. We are proud and honoured to be supporting Starlight Children’s Foundation because they provide kindness, cheer and laughter through difficult times. They are a meaningful emotionally supportive organization for children who live with serious illness or injuries. Starlight focuses on providing the happy moments children need to be able to endure insurmountable difficulties with confidence and courage—they are the support that provides smiles for those that need them the most.

Since 1989, Starlight Children’s Foundation has enhanced the lives of countless children and their families across Canada. By granting wishes, providing state-of-the-art Fun Centers for audiovisual entertainment in pediatric hospitals, as well as the Hospital Happenings program offering great parties, shows, activity kits and crafts to young patients, and the Great Escapes program inviting children and their families to unique monthly outings, over 21,000 children now benefit from the Foundation’s services in Canada each month, with over 5,000 in Quebec. Services are provided for children with serious, chronic or life threatening illnesses, aged 4 – 18 years.

The Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada has chapters in Montreal and Toronto, as well as expansion committees in Vancouver and Ottawa. The Starlight international headquarters are located in Los Angeles. Stephen Spielberg is President Emeritus of Starlight Children’s Foundation. With Starlight chapters worldwide, in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan and Canada, we brighten the lives of over 85,000 sick children every month.

“Lifting spirits daily” is their motto and is exactly what they do.

“There’s no greater value than showing kindness and happiness to a child in need. I am grateful there is an organization like The Starlight Foundation for Children, which brings cheer and emotional support to the children who need hope, courage, and a friendly smile.”  says My Friend Huggles president Brenda Katz.

My Friend Huggles Donation Helped Human Promise Raise Funds for Aboriginal Communities

“On behalf of the Human Promise and ONExONE, I would like to thank you so much for donating your Huggle doll to Human Promise Hockey Tournament. It was extremely generous of you, and we appreciate it. I’m pretty sure that a teacher from LCC won the doll in the raffle and she absolutely loves it! Thanks so much! This year’s hockey tournament raised over four thousand dollars that are being donated to help bring fresh food, fresh water, and provide breakfasts to several Aboriginal communities across Quebec. Your donation helped sell many raffle tickets and allowed us to achieve our goal. It could not have been accomplished without your help and continued support for the organization.”

My Friend Huggles’ Sofia doll has a very special home in a Make-A-Wish “Bedroom Make-over” for a young girl with Zellweger Syndrome.

On November 18, 2012 (Lantz, NS) Paige Treen and her family got to feel like they were on a home-makeover TV show with her new princess bedroom. Her dream princess bedroom make-over was the result of weeks of planning with Make-A-Wish® Atlantic Provinces and Scotian Homes. Through the kindness and generosity of Scotian Homes and community fundraising initiatives, Paige’s dream came true.

My Friend Huggles ‘Sofia doll has a very special home in a Make-A-Wish “bedroom Make-over” for a young girl with Zellweger Syndrome.Four year old Paige was born with a life-threatening medical condition called Zellweger Syndrome. This is a rare disorder with no cure. Paige contends with issues that include very poor eyesight, hearing loss, and neuro-muscular problems. Her life has not been easy but with the granting of her one-true-wish, it’s hoped that she’ll get some lasting joy and strength to see her and her family through the days ahead.

When her mom, Gail, applied to Make-A-Wish®, she explained, “We, as parents, just want to see our princess happy and we know a wish would do that for her.” Paige lives with her mom, dad (Peter), and older brother, Dakota. She enjoys playing with her sensory toys that have lights, vibration, and textures. Her favorite colours are pink and yellow and her favorite books are nursery rhymes.

Make-A-Wish® Atlantic Provinces grants wishes to children throughout their region who are experiencing a life-threatening medical condition. In every corner of Atlantic Canada, they like to include the child’s local community in sharing the magic of a wish experience. When they contacted Suzanne Bona at Scotian Homes/Enfield Home Hardware about helping grant Paige’s bedroom make-over, they immediately came on-board. “We would love to make Paige’s wish come true!” The Scotian Homes team went to work on designing a bed with a castle headboard and using Paige’s favorite colours to create a new magical space for a little girl who’s been through so much in her young life. The Scotian Homes team has generously donated their time, talents, and their products.

Melissa Hodgson, the Fund Development Coordinator for Make-A-Wish Atlantic Provinces contacted My Friend Huggles saying “we absolutely LOVE the My Friend Huggles Dolls, as do our Wish children”. We were honoured to have our My Friend Huggles Sofia doll part of Paige’s new princess room and are thankful Melissa reached out to us. The work Make-A-Wish Atlantic Provinces does to make these Wishes a reality is absolutely commendable as is the contributions from local companies and communities.
